Blog Swap and Hop! {Freebies!}

I am so excited to be posting over here at Teri's blog! We are participating in the Top Teachers' Blog Swap and Hop. What a great opportunity to find new blogs to follow and to get some great ideas and activities for the new school year.

First, I'd like to introduce myself in case you don't know me. My name is Lori and I am the author of Teaching With Love and Laughter. I am getting ready to enter my 18th year of teaching. And, I still love it! I teach kindergarten, first grade, and second grade writing, science, and social studies. This is me:

My post today is going to be about a back to school activity. Back in April, I posted about an activity I liked to do called Words that Describe Me. You can find that post here. After reading some of the comments posted, I came to the conclusion that I would like to do this activity during the first week or two of school. Now, what exactly is the activity that I am referring to? Glad you asked! First, I will discuss with my students what an adjective is, and they will make a list of words to describe themselves. Then, they will choose their favorite adjectives and write each one on a separate label. Students will then draw a large portrait of themselves on long white paper. Finally, they will cut out the labels and glue them onto the long white paper. Once the children have completed their portraits and labels, they can use the describing words to write an essay about themselves on the All About Me Stationary. I included a picture of this activity that one of my first graders did in April. Of course, the labels are cuter now and I added in the stationary. Children LOVE to write about themselves, and this activity should give them a good start. Younger students may feel more comfortable already having some of the labels filled in. They just need to add the adjectives in the boxes. The remaining boxes can be used for their own adjectives.
